Fluency disorders<\/h3>\n<\/summary>\n

If a person repeats certain sounds and has trouble saying the complete word, there might be a fluency disorder. Stuttering is a common one: a word part may be repeated (as in wa-wa-wa-want), a single sound held for an abnormally long time (as in caaaaaaandle), or a sound may not come out at all.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n<\/div>\n

Articulation disorders<\/h3>\n<\/summary>\n

A wide range of errors when talking: substituting one sound for another (\u201cwed\u201d instead of \u201cred\u201d), omitting sounds (\u201ccan\u201d instead of \u201cscan\u201d) or adding sounds (\u201choliliday\u201d instead of \u201choliday\u201d). Lisping is also an articulation disorder: \u201cs\u201d and \u201cz\u201d are replaced by \u201cth\u201d (\u201csimple\u201d sounds like \u201cthimple\u201d).<\/p>\n<\/details>\n<\/div>\n

Language disorders<\/h3>\n<\/summary>\n

Language disorders make it hard to find the right words and form clear sentences when speaking, and can make it hard to understand what others are saying. A person may struggle to understand others, to put thoughts into words, or both.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n<\/div>\n

Voice disorders<\/h3>\n<\/summary>\n

A person might have a voice disorder if people have trouble understanding them: a child may start a sentence loud and clear but end it quiet and mumbling, or sound as if they have a cold or are talking through their nose.<\/p>\n

Apraxia (also known as verbal apraxia or dyspraxia) is an oral-motor speech disorder: moving the muscles and structures needed to form speech sounds into words is difficult.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n<\/div>\n
