The Italian Social Security (previdenza sociale) system is managed by the National Social Security Institute (Instituto Nazionale Previdenza Sociale, INPS) which provides benefits to workers in case of illness, maternity or unemployment.
It also provides family allowances and benefits for the disabled and elderly. However, it does not administer the national health system, which is a separate entity.
If an INPS physician deems that you are unable to work and you have at least five years of paid social security contributions behind you, then you have the right to receive a disability pension. This disability pension is not permanent and the status can be changed at any time.
Application for disability pension must be made directly to the Social Security Institute. All the necessary forms can be obtained from the INPS website.
The application must be accompanied by complete medical documentation.
Medelit provides a service for foreign long-term workers in Milan who need to apply for a disability pension.
The service, delivered directly through a home visit by an expert and specialised Doctor, provides a comprehensible English-spoken aid so as to better understand the procedures and the medical documentation that must be gathered. Our expert Doctors can also accompany patients directly at the social security institute offices if needed.
