When is Acupuncture useful?

The latest research shows that acupuncture can affect most of the body’s systems.

Many conditions, many systems

Acupuncture contributes to treating bone and joint problems, obstetric and gynaecological conditions, mental health problems, lung diseases, bladder and digestive issues, neurological conditions, otolaryngology and oral conditions, and dermatological conditions.

Chronic pain

Its best-known use is managing and reducing chronic pain, where it has proved effective also in reducing the need for medications that can cause unwanted side effects.

Fewer side effects

The incidence of side effects is lower than that of many drugs or accepted medical procedures used for the same conditions.

Mild and self-correcting

Minor side effects, such as dizziness or bruising around needle points, are mild and self-correcting. The risk of a serious adverse reaction is less than 1 in 10,000 — far less than many western medicine treatments.

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a holistic health technique belonging to Traditional Chinese Medicine: trained practitioners stimulate specific points on the body by inserting fine needles into the skin, to prevent and cure the symptoms of a variety of physical and psychological conditions.

How does it work?

Very thin needles placed at specific points along the body’s meridians stimulate the nerves in skin and muscle. By balancing the energy that flows through the meridians, treatment can increase the body’s release of natural painkillers (such as endorphin and serotonin); acupuncture has also been proven to benefit overall health and sense of wellbeing after treatment.

Is acupuncture safe?

Acupuncture is one of the safest medical treatments on offer in the UK. Medelit has selected the best acupuncture practitioners in London for its home visiting team — treatment by qualified, highly experienced practitioners is the best guarantee of a safe and effective treatment.

Does acupuncture hurt?

Treatments are non-invasive and relatively pain-free. Some people feel the needles go through the skin, but most just feel “pressure”: the needles are even thinner than hypodermic needles — thinner than a human hair! During treatment you may only feel the energy (qi) moving, or a blocked channel opening.

How many treatments will I need?

It depends entirely on your personal condition, how long you have had it and how severe it is. It is impossible to predict how quickly your body will respond: some people — “acupuncture strong responders” — notice benefit after just a few sessions.

What the number of sessions depends on

  • whether your problem is acute or chronic
  • how long you have had the problem
  • your age
  • your general state of health
  • how your body responds to acupuncture
  • your diet and lifestyle

When will I notice a change?

If you are going to respond to the therapy, positive changes will be noticed within 3–4 sessions: your pain and symptoms become less severe, you sleep more restfully, your mood is brighter and you feel better than before.

This is an encouraging result, suggesting that with continuing care you will experience more and more relief.

Relaxed, familiar surroundings

Acupuncture done at home is particularly helpful: the less “medicalised”, more relaxed surroundings provide the best conditions for the treatment itself.

A person-centred assessment

Treatment begins with a full assessment of your signs and symptoms, seen in the context of your personal situation — your story, preferences, past experiences, current needs and wishes. At the heart of traditional acupuncture lies a person-centred approach: each treatment is individually tailored.

Short notice, evenings and weekends

Acupuncture home visits are available at very short notice, and also on weekends and in the evenings. Once you start your treatment, you are always seen by the same acupuncturist, so its outcome is not disrupted.

Our home visiting acupuncture service offers:

  • Acupuncture and Electro-Acupuncture

More to Know…

What to expect, from your first home consultation to your follow-up sessions.

Initial appointment

The initial home consultation lasts approximately an hour. Your practitioner goes further into your health history and the general functioning of your body systems, looking at your whole-body health — not only the parts suffering with disease or imbalance.

Every first visit ends with a plan for future sessions, arranged around your schedule.

Follow-up appointments

Follow-up home visits last up to 30–45 minutes, according to your condition and your response to acupuncture. Your acupuncturist will discuss how many treatments you should have and how often. We generally recommend starting with one session a week for six consecutive weeks.

What will I experience?

Your acupuncturist first asks about your pain and/or health-related goals, then usually looks at your tongue and presses on vital organs to check what may be changing the balance of your body.

Sterile, disposable small needles are placed in specific areas of your body while your acupuncturist checks your pulse and feels how the energy is flowing, gently placing their fingers or hands on specific areas — an unbalanced area often shows as redness around the needle. You relax while the needles stay in place; once they are removed you can go about your day, drinking plenty of water to help your body’s detoxifying process.

A very professional medical group. Responded immediately to my mums caring needs. We were desperate for a home visit and they answered promptly and allocated a very thorough doctor for us. Doctor made mum very relaxed because mum is usually a very nervous patient. I will recommend others to use them. Very satisfied with their services. Way to go Medelit. Well done!

Fees vary by acupuncturist and specialisation, because each acupuncturist sets their own. Compare them when you check availability, so you can weigh cost alongside expertise.

A home visit is ideal when you have mobility issues, are caring for a child or elderly relative, are too unwell to travel, need attention outside surgery hours, or simply prefer the privacy and comfort of home.

You receive a comprehensive report, and your acupuncturist can coordinate any follow-up care or additional services you need.

No referral is needed. You can book directly with any Medelit acupuncturist. However, if you have a referral letter from your NHS GP or another doctor, our practitioners are happy to accept it.
