Wound Care and Dressings at Home

As a home healthcare provider, Medelit’s home visiting nurses help treat and heal chronic or acute wounds for many patients directly in their homes. Our highly trained and specialized nurses provide dressings for wounds ranging from surgical to pressure ulcers, injuries to bedsores and diabetic and neuropathic ulcers.

From minor injuries to chronic and post-surgical wounds, our nurses provide a comprehensive range of advanced wound care services in the comfort and privacy of your own home, or wherever is most convenient for you, including your office, hotel room, or as well as in retirement homes or private hospitals.

Our Wound Care Service at Home is based on an individualized approach that will ensure the best wound management, by restoring the natural healing process, avoiding complications, and using the best techniques available. The process starts with a nurse coming to your home for a first dressing and a full assessment. We will always ask for a referral letter from your Doctor wherever this is possible, as this will help provide precious information to the nurse prior to the home visit. If you do not have a referral letter, we will be able to book a home visit with the nurse, who will also take the time to fully assess the situation and draw a skilled nursing treatment plan that can be coordinated with your Doctor’s indications and updates. There are many factors that are taken into consideration by both the home nurse and your GP as to what the plan is to heal the wound.  In all cases, the plan requires for the nurse to come to your home on a regular schedule to assess, clean and dress the wound until it has healed or you can safely take care of it yourself or with the help of a family member or carer.  A record is kept of each visit and dressing and this can be shared with your Doctor.  If your GP or consultant feels a change should be made to the wound care plan, they can easily contact us so we can pass the indications on to the visiting nurse.  Once the wound is healed, you will have one final nurse home visit where you will be provided with instructions for the future.

Our fully registered nurses also provide patient and family education about wound care procedures and prevention, to allow the wound to heal as quickly and safely as possible and to be sure that the wound care process is as comfortable and safe as possible and that patient and family are made independent as soon as possible.

With Medelit you can count on a 7/7 availability, including weekends and bank holidays. You can book your home visit with our nurses at any time directly through our online booking system.

FAQs on Wound Care and Dressing at Home

A dressing is a sterile pad applied to a wound to promote healing and protect the wound from further complications. A dressing is designed to be in direct contact with the wound, unlike the bandage, which is most often used to hold a dressing in place.

For Superficial Wound dressing: Caregiver and Nursing staff.
For Surgical dressing, Diabetic and Bedsore dressing, Suture Dressing : Only Nursing Staff can do.

Our nurses ensure the best wound care management, including dressing changes, pain management and future wound prevention. Also, our experienced nurses are available to educate patient and family for wound care procedures and managing at home, to allow the wound to heal as quickly and safely as possible and to allow patients to recover independently at home.

The original dressing can be left in place for up to two days (or as advised by the doctor), keeping it as dry as possible. If the dressing becomes wet from blood or any other liquid, it must be changed.

A prescription or referral letter is always strongly recommended and mandatory in case of surgical wounds, suture dressings and acute trauma and burns. This will allow the nurse to follow specifical medical instructions, use the best dressing techniques for each single situation and provide a safe management of the wound. Prescription should be send to us before your appointment, so we can check that it is valid and provides the nurse with all clear instructions.

Our nursing services are currently available in London, Greater London and part of Essex. We do also offer the service further out; this may imply an additional cost to cover travel. Feel free to contact us and we will check your address for you.
