Frequently Asked Questions About Orthopaedic Surgery

Frequently Asked Questions About Orthopaedic Surgery

When do I need to see an Orthopaedic Surgeon?

Generally, you would want to be seen by an orthopaedic surgeon if you have difficulties performing activities that involve the musculoskeletal system such as walking, running, moving around with ease or if you are experiencing pain in the muscles or joints.

Also swelling, bruises or signs of infection that persist for more than a few days should not be underestimated. The musculoskeletal system can be affected by a vast number of issues, therefore it is never easy to understand whether an orthopaedic problem is temporary or whether there are more serious issues underlying. For this reason, in case of doubts, it is advisable to contact your family doctor who will evaluate the most suitable treatment for you and refer your to an orthopaedic surgeon in case of need.

What conditions do Orthopaedic Surgeons Usually Treat?

Orthopaedic surgeons are provide care in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disorders of joints, ligaments, bones, tendons and muscles. Some orthopaedist surgeons are generalists, while others specialise in certain areas of the body, such as knee and hip.
Diseases and conditions generally seen and treated by orthopaedic surgeons include:
– Fractures all the complications arising therefrom

What is the Most Common Orthopaedic Surgery?

Arthroscopic surgery of the knee, shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip and ankle represent the most common orthopedic treatments, together with.
joint replacement surgery and the treatment of soft tissue injuries (torn tendons or ligaments).

What are the most common complications of hip and knee replacement surgery?

Hip or knee replacement surgery complication rates are usually very low. However, as with all surgical procedures, they do carry a risk of complications. The most feared complications, besides those associated to anesthesia and thrombosis (common to all lower limb surgeries), are: infection, periprosthetic fracture (specific to hip replacement surgery), implant dislocation and rigidity (for the knee prosthesis). Altogether, these complications occur in approximately 1-2% of surgeries and sometimes imply the need for a new surgical procedure to solve the problem.
A special note should be made on periprosthetic fractures: the bone adjacent to the prosthesis is at a higher risk of fractures. This is the reason for which any activity/situation associated with an increased risk of falls should be avoided until an adequate muscular preparation has been carried out post-surgery (for example high-impact sports such as football, skiing, etc). This is even more the case in fragile individuals such as the elderly.

Will I need Physiotherapy after a hip or knee replacement surgery?

After a hip and especially a knee replacement surgery, physiotherapy is essential for a good final result.
Physiotherapy should be carried out every day for at least 2-3 months so as to strengthen muscles and prevent falls.
