How It Works

1

Choose the therapist, no address needed

Press Choose & Book: you go straight to the booking page listing the English-speaking speech and language therapists available by video, with CV, areas of expertise, reviews and exact fee. Choose and book.

2

A time within a day or two, documents sent ahead

The therapist proposes a slot, within one or two days at most, and you can send earlier reports, school notes or hearing tests in advance, as the booking confirmation explains. Payment is taken at confirmation and charged after the session; a short consent form precedes the first call.

3

Assessment, report, then the cycle

The first video meeting is an assessment with standardised tests where useful; you receive a written report and the first activities the same week. Treatment then runs as a cycle with the same therapist, with exercises to do between sessions.

Assessment in the language a child thinks in matters: it tells you what is a delay and what is simply bilingualism taking its time.

What Works on Video — and When You Need a Visit

Speech and language therapy is talk, play and repetition, which is why it transfers to a screen so well; a few things still need a therapist in the room, and we say which.

Works well on video

  • Language delay and disorders in children old enough to engage with a screen, usually from around four with a parent alongside
  • Articulation and pronunciation — the sounds that will not come, in English or in Italian
  • Stammering and fluency, in children and adults
  • Voice problems — hoarseness, vocal strain in teachers, singers and people who speak all day
  • Aphasia and dysarthria after a stroke or brain injury
  • Learning difficulties with a language component, and cognitive-communication work
  • Parent coaching — what to do at home between sessions

Headphones often help a child focus; a webcam is recommended but not compulsory.

When you need a visit

  • Feeding and swallowing assessments need the therapist present: in the cities we cover, the home speech therapy service takes over, with the same clinician where possible.
  • Very young children who cannot yet sit with a screen are better assessed at home or through parent-led sessions.
  • Hearing must be checked first when it has not been: the therapist will tell you and can point you to an audiology test in English.

What to send beforehand

Previous speech therapy reports, any neuropsychiatry or psychology assessment, school reports or teacher notes, hearing tests if already done, and for voice problems any ENT or phoniatric report. A few lines on when the difficulty shows help too.

How a child’s session runs

Short, game-like activities on screen, a parent within reach, and a task or two for the week. Younger children work in shorter bursts; teenagers and adults in full sessions.

Video and home visits together

The two modes belong to one pathway: an assessment at home can continue by video when the family travels, and a video cycle can add in-person sessions where the home service reaches you.

Why Online Speech Therapy Through Medelit

Therapy in the language your child thinks in

A child assessed in the wrong language looks more delayed than they are. Our therapists work in English and understand bilingual development.

Continuity through the move

A cycle started before the relocation, or in one Italian city, carries on by video with the same therapist — no restarting the waiting list in every new place.

A report you can act on

The assessment ends with a written report in English: what was found, what the goals are, and what the school or the paediatrician needs to know.

Selected, not listed

Each therapist holds an Italian degree and registration, is insured, reference-checked and interviewed by our medical direction, and has specific experience of therapy by video.

Around school, work and time zones

Sessions after school, before work or on Saturdays, requested by you; packages of five keep the same therapist for the whole cycle.

Invoices schools and insurers accept

Every session is invoiced as a regular healthcare service; international policies and school support schemes often reimburse speech therapy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does online speech therapy work for children?

Yes, for most language, articulation, fluency and voice goals, provided the child can engage with a screen for short activities. Some children with attention difficulties actually do better on video with headphones on, because the screen narrows the world to the task.

From what age can a child be seen by video?

As a rule from around four, with a parent alongside; younger children are better assessed at home or through parent-coaching sessions where the therapist guides you and you do the playing. The therapist advises after hearing about your child.

My child is bilingual and late to talk — delay or just two languages?

Often the second, sometimes the first, and the only way to know is an assessment that takes both languages into account. Bilingual children may split their vocabulary across languages and still be on track; a genuine delay shows in both. The report tells you which, and what to do.

Can adults have speech therapy online after a stroke?

Yes. Aphasia, dysarthria and cognitive-communication difficulties respond to structured, repeated practice, which video delivers well, with a family member in the room if that helps. Swallowing problems are the exception and need an in-person assessment.

What happens in the first assessment?

Around 60 minutes: your history, the documents you sent, standardised tests where they add something, and a first set of activities. You receive a written report with findings and goals, and a proposed cycle of sessions.

How many sessions, and how long is each?

Sessions run 45 to 60 minutes for adults and older children, shorter for the youngest. Cycles are planned in blocks with a review at the end of each; packages of five cover a typical block.

Do parents take part?

For younger children, yes: you sit within reach, learn the techniques, and carry them into daily life between sessions, which is where most progress happens. Teenagers usually work alone with the therapist.

What should I send before the first session?

Previous speech therapy reports, any neuropsychiatry or psychology assessment, school reports or teacher notes, hearing tests, and for voice cases any ENT report. Everything is uploaded encrypted and read before the assessment.

Can we continue if we leave Italy?

Yes. The platform works from any country, so a cycle started in Italy finishes with the same therapist after a move or over a summer spent abroad.

How much does online speech therapy cost?

A first online speech therapy assessment starts from € 70; each therapist’s exact fee is visible before you book, and discounted packages of five sessions cover treatment cycles. The fee is taken at confirmation and charged only after the session takes place; a video session cancelled with under 48 hours’ notice is charged in full.
