Online Doctor in English — Video Consultations for Italy
An English-speaking GP on your screen, wherever you are in Italy — a hotel room in Sicily, a rented flat in Bologna, a farmhouse in Tuscany. Primary care by video, with a written report, and where appropriate a prescription, sent to your inbox.
Fees shown before you book. No account needed.

How It Works
Pick a doctor, no address needed
Press Choose & Book: you go straight to the booking page listing the English-speaking GPs available for video, with CV, reviews and the exact fee. Choose one and book — from anywhere in Italy, or abroad.
A time is proposed, usually within hours
The doctor confirms a slot, most often the same day. Payment is taken at confirmation and charged only once the consultation has taken place; before the first call you complete a short consent form.
Talk to the doctor, then read the report
Join from your phone or laptop in the browser. Afterwards you receive a written report in English and, where the doctor judges it appropriate, a prescription or certificate, plus the invoice for your insurer.
Medelit is not an emergency service — in a medical emergency in Italy call 112. For everything that is not an emergency but cannot wait for you to find a clinic in a foreign country, this is the door.

What Works on Video — and When You Need a Visit
A video consultation is a real medical consultation with a licensed Italian doctor, but it has limits, and we would rather you knew them before you book than after.
✓Works well on video
- Fever, flu and colds, sore throat
- Gastro upsets and urinary symptoms
- Rashes and bites, allergies
- Headaches, back and neck pain, sleep problems
- Medication questions and repeat medication
- Results explained — blood tests, imaging, discharge letters
- Certificates — fit-to-fly, fit-to-work, private sick notes
→When you need a visit
- Anything that needs hands on you: listening to a chest, examining an abdomen, dressing a wound, an injection.
- The doctor will say so and point you to a home visit, a clinic or, if needed, A&E.
- Controlled medicines and public-system (SSN) prescriptions cannot be issued by video, whatever the reason.
Prescriptions, honestly
Issuing a prescription is entirely the doctor’s clinical decision during the consultation and cannot be guaranteed beforehand. When issued, it is a private Italian prescription as a PDF, valid in Italian pharmacies for non-controlled medicines. No controlled substances, no public-system prescriptions.
Paper originals by post
Some prescriptions are only valid as a paper original. The doctor posts it to your address in Italy: allow extra days, and expect a small additional charge, usually € 10 to 15 depending on the doctor.
Certificates on Medelit paper
Fit-to-fly, fit-to-work and private sick notes for a foreign employer or university can be issued by video where clinically appropriate. Italian INPS sick certificates cannot be issued.
From abroad too
Follow-ups after a diagnosis made in Italy, or a first orientation before you arrive, can take place from any country. The doctor is Italian-registered; the paperwork is Italian.
Why an Online Doctor Through Medelit
The Italian system, explained
Which pharmacy will take which prescription, when the guardia medica applies, what a hospital triage colour means: an English-speaking doctor who knows both worlds.
Where the home service cannot reach
Islands, hill towns, ski resorts and beaches are outside home-visit coverage. On video, coverage is the whole country.
The same doctor next time
Expats without a GP of their own can return to the same clinician for repeat medication and chronic follow-up, from any city they move to.
Selected, not listed
Every doctor is registered in Italy, insured, reference-checked and interviewed by our medical direction before joining — you see their CV before you choose.
A step to the right door
If the doctor decides you need a specialist, a home visit, a test or a clinic, the same team arranges it in English.
Paperwork your insurer reads
Report and invoice in English, ready for a travel-insurance claim or your employer.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can an online doctor in Italy give me a prescription, and will the pharmacy accept it?
If the doctor considers it clinically appropriate, yes: you receive a private Italian prescription as a PDF, which Italian pharmacies accept for medicines that are not controlled substances. A prescription is never guaranteed before the consultation — it depends only on the doctor’s judgement of your situation. Public-system prescriptions and controlled drugs cannot be issued.
Why would a prescription be posted, and what does it cost?
A few medicines require the paper original rather than a PDF. In that case the doctor posts it to your Italian address: allow extra days for delivery, and expect an additional charge, usually between € 10 and € 15, set by the individual doctor.
Can I get a sick note or a fit-to-fly certificate?
Fit-to-fly, fit-to-work and private sick notes for a foreign employer, school or university can be issued on Medelit headed paper where clinically appropriate, at the doctor’s discretion. Italian INPS sick certificates for Italian employers cannot be issued by this service.
How quickly can I speak to a doctor?
After you book, the doctor proposes a time, usually within hours, seven days a week including holidays. Requests sent at night are handled first thing the next morning.
What do I need for the video call?
A phone, tablet or computer with a camera and an internet connection. The call runs in your browser on a secure platform — nothing to download, no account to create. Have any medication boxes, test results or reports to hand.
Can you explain results or a discharge letter written in Italian?
Yes. Send the documents in advance or show them on camera; the doctor goes through them in English and tells you what they mean and what, if anything, to do next.
What about children?
Children are seen by paediatricians. English-speaking paediatric home visits are available in the main cities, and an English-speaking online paediatrician sees children by video from anywhere in Italy.
Is the consultation covered by travel or private insurance?
You receive a regular healthcare invoice and a report in English, the two documents insurers ask for. Whether the policy reimburses depends on its terms, so check before or after — the paperwork will be ready either way.
Can I consult from outside Italy?
Yes. A follow-up after treatment in Italy, or a first conversation before you travel, can happen from any country. Prescriptions and certificates remain Italian documents, valid in Italy.
How much does an online doctor cost?
A GP video consultation starts from € 65. Each doctor’s exact fee is shown before you book; you pay at confirmation and are charged only once the consultation has taken place.
