When a Home Visit Is Right — and When It Is Not
Most childhood illness is frightening for parents and manageable for a paediatrician at the bedside. A small number of situations are not, and a good paediatric service says which is which before you book.

- Ear pain, red eyes, swollen glands, a chesty cold that will not lift

- Newborn questions: feeding, weight, colic, jaundice that appeared after discharge

- A fever in a baby under three months, a non-blanching rash, a stiff neck, a fit, or a child who is unusually drowsy and hard to rouse.
- Serious injury, swallowed objects or chemicals, a severe allergic reaction. Italy’s children’s hospitals have dedicated paediatric emergency departments; a home visit is the wrong tool for these.
